How can I move my savings to Canada as an American?

I don’t have a lot, but my wife and I were planning to emigrate in five years anyway. We’d like to start saving in Canadian dollars now. We live near the border, but in a rural area with no major cities. How easy would it be to open a savings or money-market account?

I’m pretty sure you have to be a Resident Indian, Canadian citizen, or landed immigrant to open a bank account. They usually asks questions like SIN number and such.

In addition they ask about proof of identity, and the list from one bank does not include any American pieces of ID.
