What percentage of your paycheck should you put into savings each month?

I also have a 401K I put money into and I have savings setup for my 2 children. I put about 50.00 a month for them each. But I don’t put any money into a separate savings for my husband and us. Go figure. I just don’t know how much we should be putting away. I leave everything in the checking.

In this economy you can not live unless you have at least 6 months worth of savings in a savings account ready for access in case you lose your job or a catastrophe of some kind.

You are breaking all the financial rules by not doing that.
Save the max in your 401K the company matches – usually 3%.
The total savings should be at least 15% of your take home.

Forget percentages right now – you need to build up an emergency fund – and you need to do it now.
